Joy behind the camera

Joy Mahana is a self taught Brooklyn-based artist. Her vast subject matter spans from modern-abstracts, to portraits, to large scale contemporary floras. Using a palette and materials that express her exuberance, her work represents her persona. Joy's work has been featured in collections of luxurious homes throughout the country.

Her varied points of reference and inspiration are drawn from her family, fascination with color and spiritual life.

Joy's most recent and exciting project pays tribute to her Jewish Heritage in the form of vibrant acrylics and resin on canvas; a portrait series of Sephardic and Ashkenazi rabbis.

"Glossy and shockingly imbued with color, these are not how we typically envision portraits of our sages. I wanted to paint portraits that have a fresh take on a traditional subject. I hope I’ve achieved in my work, paintings that bring reverence, awe and Q’edusha into the contemporary home. When I started painting the rabbis, it became a passion. I read about them and tried to capture their inner light and spirit."

"It’s my honor to exhibit my work at Congregation Beth Torah.”"
